The High Cost of Fat: A Focus on Childhood Obesity

Obesity, and especially childhood obesity, and its associated medical and social complications like the spread of diabetes, are running rampant in American society. Central Oregonians are not immune to these significant and costly health, social, and emotional impacts.

On June 19, 2008 The City Club of Central Oregon and The Bank of Cascades will present the third Thursday forum, "The High Cost of Fat: A Focus on Childhood Obesity"  The forum will address these issues in a panel presentation by; Jim Lussier, Founder of The Lussier Center, Dr. Bruce Brundage, Cardiologist, Interim Medical Director, Heart Institute of the Cascades of  and Judy Shasek, Invention Synergist, invenTEAM.

Issues to be presented include the pervasive nature of obesity in our region, its unintended impacts on business, schools and social services like healthcare, the long-term medical ramifications of obesity, especially in our children and finally what we as a society, individuals and parents can and should be doing to curb its spread and reduce its impact.

The Forum will begin at 11:30 at St. Charles Center for Health and Learning located at 2500 Neff Road in Bend. Jim Lussier

Jim is founder and principle consultant of The Lussier Center/TLC. The Lussier Group/TLC focuses on the quest for personal and organizational performance excellence through the development of governance and leadership skills. Jim is an active member of numerous boards and commissions, including the Board of Directors of Cascade Healthcare Community (CHC), where he served as President/CEO until 2004.  CHC operates St. Charles Medical Center, a regional referral center serving central and eastern Oregon and St. Charles Medical Center – Redmond, Oregon. Jim has been employed and active in health care for 36 years.

Bruce H. Brundage, M.D.

Dr. Brundage is Medical Director of the Heart Institute of the Cascades and Emeritus Professor of Medicine, David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine.  Brundage attended UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry) New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey.  He was a Fellow in Cardiology at Letterman Army Medical Center, SAn Francisco, CA.He did an Internal Medicine Residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, CO and a rotating Internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Dr. Brundage served in the United States Army reserves and is a retired Colonel, United States Army.

Judy Shasek

"Full circle" is the best way to define the unique talents and expertise of Judy Shasek - from pioneering interactive and ground-breaking fitness trainings in the early days of “aerobics,” to two decades teaching and developing “ExerLearning®” processes. Shasek wrote the first myth set in the Internet, developed the web-based curriculum and did author workshops that brought Internet safety to thousands of children across the country. E-WALLY AND THE QUEST and the sequel, E-WALLY AND THE RENEGADES proved to be popular with kids in grades 3-7, and valuable to teachers.

Designing a synthesis of education and fitness that dramatically impacts youth fitness and academic success, she produced the popular, innovative program: Generation FIT ® based on a philosophy she defines as, ExerLearning®.
Curriculum development, programs that meet the needs of students with varied aptitudes and learning challenges, wellness programs, interactive video games, patented computer peripherals and fitness solutions have all resulted in nationally acclaimed projects over the past decade. Shasek's focus has been developing learning/fitness-solutions by building synergies among those most able to turn the tide on the health dilemma our sedentary culture has generated.
